This course is designed for the beginner who is interested in developing skills in cake decorating and sugar craft through vocational study. It is suitable for catering students wanting to enhance their vocational skills or is ideal for those who would like to take up cake decoration with the aim of being self-employed.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements at this level, please enquire if you are at all unsure as to your suitability for the course and we will be happy to discuss the course and it's requirements.
What will I be doing on the course?
The Foundation programme deals with basic cake decorating skills and pressure piping. It will give you an understanding of cake decorating and sugar craft techniques and design. It will give you an understanding of the commodities you will be using and develop your specialist skills, giving you practical experience in handling tools and equipment. You will study health and safety, preparation and use of royal icing, convenience products, sugar paste, and marzipan.
How do I study the course?
Certification is by course work assessment. Throughout each Stage and/or module of the course a systematic assessment of students' practical, design and written work (where applicable) will be conducted by the tutor according to the criteria set out following each syllabus. There are two short multiple-choice
papers in Royal Icing and Sugar Paste plus Health and Safety Requirements.
*If you are under 19 courses are usually FREE, however, there are some exceptions ie: Professional Accredited Courses (AAT,etc), Microsoft Academy and various short courses. Over 19s will be expected to pay a course fee, however, many people qualify for fee reductions, particularly those in receipt of benefits such as Job Seekers Allowance, Housing Benefit or Income Support. hat can I do after this course?
On successful completion of this course you can progress to the Awarding Body Consortium Intermediate Cake Decoration Course or to the Awarding Body Consortium Foundation Wired Sugar Flowers.
Information regarding fees/costs
Icing Equipment: Piping Tubes numbers 44, 3, 2, 1, Petal tube 58. (Left Handed or Right Handed), Plain Scraper, Serrated Scraper, Straight Edge, Palette Knife & Pastry Brush. Art Equipment: Pencils, Ruler, Eraser, Compass, Set of 12 Acrylic Paints, A3 Flip File, Cryla 15 Sheet A3 Acrylic Painting Pad. Paint Brushes: No 3, No 0000, No 0, No 1. Uniform: For Health and Safety reasons, it will be necessary for white protective clothing to be worn, preferably a white lab coat and a white hat.
