Course Description

This innovative Foundation Certificate, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, will allow students to choose six individual modules of interest to them from a larger portfolio of titles. It is anticipated that the modules will be completed over a period of between 18 months and two years.

The modules listed below cover specialisms in Machinery Management. All of the modules will be derived from those studies on the equivalent full-time degree programmes in the above subject areas. This Foundation Certificate has been developed to enable students to achieve a recognised qualification by selecting those modules relevant to their own personal interests or future career aspirations.

The course is ideal for anyone with a keen interest in machinery who wants to work in this challenging and exciting industry or for those people currently in employment who want to progress to management positions.

Compulsory modules:

Machinery Principles and Technology (double module) - This module aims to discuss the principles of agricultural machinery systems and to allow investigation of the strength and suitability of materials in relation to different roles within machinery. Safety systems within machinery will also be considered. The student will also develop skills in the acquisition and analysis of primary and secondary data.

Work Skills Development

This module provides students with first-hand experience where students will use their industry environment to develop practical and technical skills. Students will record and reflect on their own personal development during the module.

Information Technology and CAD

Employers are demanding higher levels of IT skills and competency. This module takes a practical approach and will enhance and consolidate existing IT skills such as MS Project and Excel. An introduction to and the use of Computer Aided Design is provided.

Option modules (two modules from the following):

Electronic Control Systems

Modern machinery has a large dependence on a wide variety of electronic control systems from ECUs to more sophisticated diagnostic and control systems. This module will demonstrate the basic principles of how these systems work and the effect they have on the wider vehicle.

Drive Train Systems for Agricultural Vehicles

The systems used to enable movement within modern agricultural and construction machinery are complex. This module will involve learning about the engine, transmission and hydraulic systems. These have become increasingly complex in recent years. The student will examine the materials used, type of construction and design methodology behind these systems.

Business Management

This module introduces key areas of management activity such as human resource management, leadership, marketing and finance to allow students to develop further knowledge and skills to improve future employability in land based industries.
