Entry Requirements:

120 UCAS Tariff points from one of the following:

  • 2 A-levels (at least one at C)
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at PPP
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma at MP
  • 2 Scottish Highers at minimum C or above
  • 3 Irish Highers at minimum C or above
  • NVQ Level 3 in a relevant discipline
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma at 24 points

AS levels and Scottish Intermediate 2s may be used to contribute to entry requirements but they are not sufficient for entry on their own. Alternative equivalent qualifications will also be considered positively.

Consideration will be given to non-traditional qualifications and relevant work experience. Applicants are encouraged to produce evidence of their potential to benefit from the course. Applicants who believe they may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Certificated and/or Experiential Learning (APCL/APEL) for certain modules will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants who do not hold a Level 3 qualification but have extensive relevant experience may be offered opportunity to undertake a pre-entry assignment to demonstrate ability to study at the required level.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must be able to demonstrate proof of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at level 6.0 (with no component score lower than 5.5) or equivalent.

Course Description:

The Foundation Degree, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, is a step forward for the floral designer, designed as an introduction to commercial aspects of floral design at a professional standard- traditional, period, contemporary and experimental designs. Incorporated within these designs are the latest trends in manipulation of fresh plant material and experimental designs using modern decorative accessories.

Specialist design modules include; historical, sympathy and professional floristry design. You will also develop knowledge of essential professional floristry techniques, business management for small enterprises, and research methods for the design industries. Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills for industry and work on many live briefs to develop a varied and specialist portfolio throughout the course.

Course Content

Work Skills Development

This module provides students with first-hand experience where students will use their industry environment to develop practical and technical skills. Students will record and reflect on their own personal development during the module.

Professional Floristry

This module is a largely practical one. The student will develop professional commercial skills in the design and construction of a range of commercial floral pieces. Native floral design styles, influences and key floral designers will be studied. Students will develop a portfolio of the design work completed in the first year of the course. The student will gain experience in presenting and in communicating their knowledge.

Floristry Workroom Management

The basic principles involved in preparation, care, conditioning, installation, storage and maintenance of flower and plant material and floristry products is studied. A working knowledge of plant identification will be gained. Sustainability, countries of production and Health and Safety policies within the floristry industry will also be covered.

Historical Floral Design (half module)

The aim of this module is to give the student an introduction to historical developments in floristry and floral design. The use of flowers and foliages throughout the ages will be studied. The student will create a variety of practical pieces using traditional and modern construction methods. Students will also study period settings enabling them to create designs that are sympathetic in historical buildings.

Principles and Elements of Design (half module)

This is a very creative and inspiring module where the principles and elements of design are studied. This provides the student with the underpinning knowledge in design which will be applied to all other practical modules on the two year programme. The student will explore each of the principles and elements in practical sessions using a variety of mediums.

Floral Techniques and Concepts (half module)

The student will gain a repertoire of professional floristry techniques. Students will create a range of professional floral pieces to enable them to develop their understanding of principles and elements of design. The student will produce a working document to give them the confidence to accurately interpret different techniques and concepts.

Sympathy Floral Design (half module)

The student will be given an overview of the sympathy floral design industry. Students will gain practical experience in creating specialised funeral designs and the module will also cover communication with a variety of clients and building relationships with funeral directors.

Business Management

This module introduces key areas of management activity such as human resource management, leadership, marketing and finance to allow students to develop further knowledge and skills to improve future employability in land based industries.

Portfolio design, sketchbook development, practical time constrained exercises, variety of working industry documents, team work and communication assessments.

Work Experience:


Students are encouraged to undertake relevant industry experience in a floristry or floral design enterprise. The course is structured to ensure that lectures are built around the peak periods of Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day to enable students to gain real life experience at these times. There is no formal industrial placement on this course.


What are our graduates doing now?


Emma launched her own floristry business, ‘Willows Florist’ after completing the Foundation Certificate course. The variety of modules gave Emma a solid foundation in both design and entrepreneurial skills.


Sara continued her studies after completing the Foundation Certificate course with distinction. She went on to gain her Level 5 qualification, the Foundation Degree in Commercial Floral Design. During her studies Sara competed at RHS Chelsea and was awarded a Silver Medal. Sara is actively involved in NAFAS, runs her own freelance floristry business where she has gained contracts for celebrity clients.


What international opportunities are available?


Students have been offered the opportunity to work alongside international designers such as Per Benjamin, Tomas de Bruyne, Max van de Sluis, Marie-Francoise Deprez, Pim van den Akker.


Students may have the opportunity to study in the USA following their course as part of a placement with Ohio University.


Students have gained employment in a number of international hotel chains including Bermuda.


Progression:


Upon successful completion, students may be able to apply to progress to Foundation Degree in related subjects, for instance the FdA Professional Floristry and Floral Design course at Myerscough College.
