Entry onto the Clinical Sciences course, either directly or via a foundation year, allows students a unique and exciting opportunity to study science and health studies, and which can lead to a career in medicine, the healthcare sciences and other healthcare professions.
This collaborative course provides an opportunity for widening participation students to enter the MBChB programme at Leeds Medical School.
Our focus is to widen participation in medical and healthcare education from students from underrepresented groups.

This course will provide you with the essential knowledge and key skills to underpin today’s ever-changing health service, and to meet the needs of our local community.
Applicants interested in the transfer to medicine opportunity can only be considered for entry to the Clinical Sciences programme via the Foundation year.

Health and Society

An introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the NHS and the healthcare professionals working within it, together with an exploration of the factors influencing healthcare provision and health promotion.

Personal and Professional Development (Foundation)

This module allows you to develop your research skills by an in-depth investigation in a clinical area of your choice. You will consolidate many transferable skills to investigate, critically evaluate and present your findings in a written dissertation and an oral presentation.

Chemistry for Clinical Sciences

An introduction to the chemical concepts and reactions required to understand modern medicine. The syllabus includes the structure of atoms and molecules, organic chemistry, kinetics and thermodynamics, using examples from human biochemistry and medicine.

Laboratory and Study Skills for Clinical Sciences/Medicine

This module provides you with academic and practical skills you need for studying clinical and medical sciences.

Biology for Clinical Sciences

This module develops your knowledge and understanding of the functions of cell components, the processes underlying cellular metabolism, the principles and importance of homeostasis and the roles of the nervous and endocrine systems in homeostatic co-ordination and response.

Special Studies (Foundation)

This module allows you to investigate selected topics related to healthcare, to develop your understanding of these areas in a self-directed manner. It also develops your transferable skills, including communication, presentations and scientific writing - all of which are useful in a healthcare setting.
