  • Currently working in a supervisory or management role
  • Successful interview
Applications are welcomed from mature candidates who can evidence both the ability to study at this level and, a current competence through relevant industrial experience

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The Foundation Degree in Business and Management is intended for those who are working in a supervisory or management role. It provides students with the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised academic qualification and develop knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to make a more effective contribution to their organisation.

The course is a combination of taught units of study, work-based learning and an annual three-streamed Business Conference. Developed in collaboration with major employers in the region, the curriculum is flexible, relevant and prepares the successful student for entry to an honours degree course, which can be completed through a further 18 months of part-time study.

Admission

We welcome applications from mature candidates (over age 21) whose work experience will have prepared them to succeed in this degree. Admission to the programme is open to those who may not have formal qualifications, but can demonstrate at interview the potential to benefit from the programme and complete it successfully. Normal University APEL (Accreditation of Prior Education and Learning) policies and Portsmouth Business School procedures will apply.

EMPLOYER SUPPORT

A key feature of the Foundation degree is the support of the student's employer, especially in the provision of a mentor and access to appropriate work-based learning

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Year 1

You will study a range of subjects including how to manage information and financial resources, and how to manage people. There will also be a substantial work-based learning component and you will take part in the annual Business Conference.

Year 2

You will study marketing and the business environment, undertake further work-based learning and attend the annual Business Conference.

Year 3

You will learn about project management, the development of management skills and what creates business excellence. You will also attend the Business Conference.

IS THIS THE RIGHT COURSE FOR ME?

You do not need to have studied business or management in the past to join this course but you will need to have an interest in both subjects, an ability to work with numbers and a passion for the world of business. If you have studied accounting or business before, you'll appreciate our fresh approach, but your academic potential and willingness to make a positive contribution are more important to us than your previous choice of study area.

We believe in developing individuals and we won't ask you to declare a set list of interests when you apply for this course. However, you will need to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm to derive maximum benefit from the course. You'll be dealing with current topics and issues, so you should take a lively interest in business and finance current affairs. We're interested in students who want to enhance their communication skills in verbal presentations and who are keen to work both independently and as part of a group.

The course is challenging, stimulating, but firmly located in the student's organisation. You will learn to apply business concepts and principles to the workplace, through analysis of a series of case studies. You will start to develop the competences needed in business, including problem diagnosis and the ability to review and choose from a range of possible solutions. You will also be equipped to take your study further, either via lifelong learning, or by going on to take an appropriate honours degree programme.

You will need to develop proficiency in IT as a University of Portsmouth and Isle of Wight College student. This will be vital to your future career in business and we'll support you by offering access to our computer suites and academic support services.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
The Isle of Wight College is considered to be in the top 10% in the country and subsequently is highly focused upon the use of highly appropriate and engaging methods of learning.

Learning and assessment will be via case study exercises, presentations, coursework, learning logs and a portfolio, together with some time-constrained assessments. The assessment regulations give some opportunity to retake assessment and subjects should this be necessary.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
When you finish the course, you will have learnt to solve common business problems, to work in groups and to take solutions into your workplace. You will be ready to continue part-time study for an honours degree, and to progress further within your workplace.
