Introduction
The Foundation Degree in Computing focuses on the knowledge and skills required for the development and support of computer-based information systems within a wide spectrum of application areas. The emphasis on this award is to provide as broad an experience of computing as possible. This involves examining a wide variety of computing applications including how they are used and what specific technical requirements they demand. The award is suitable for the student who wishes to pursue a career as an applications professional or consultant dealing with computer users. Specifically, this award provides a sound basis for a career in software production, hardware maintenance and systems development.
It is also suitable as part of a Higher Modern Apprenticeship programme and is produced in collaboration with Staffordshire University and E-Skill (the sector skill council).
Course Content
Studied part time over three years, the first year modules are:
IT Skills

Introduction to Networking with LANS and WANS (CISCO 1 and 2)

After successfully completing the first 2 years, students will have a HNC equivalent qualification.

Entry Requirements
At least 18 years old - either a BTEC National Diploma or Certificate, GNVQ Advanced or 4 GCSE passes including ONE at â€-A†level or an equivalent standard
Over 21 years of age - experience or other qualifications are considered. For those students who have not studied a BTEC course before or have not studied for some considerable time, a â€-Return to Study†course is available prior to the start of the HNC course.
Duration
The Foundation Degree in Computing normally takes three years of part time study, one day per week.
A flexible delivery pattern enables the course to be completed in two or three years.
There is an option at the end of year two to elect to re-enroll on the HNC course and not choose to complete the Foundation Degree's final year.

Assessment
Each module of the Foundation Degree is assessed largely through coursework and assignments. However, there is usually an exam for at least 1 module for each semester.
Assignments and exams are marked provisionally by course lecturers and then considered before a SURF board at Staffordshire University. The final ratified semester results are posted to students approximately a month after each semester.
Progression
A Foundation Degree will provide a sound basis to enhance your future employment prospects. This course is designed to train people to enter successfully into careers that can progress to senior management positions in industry, commerce and the public sector. It may be used for entry to higher qualifications and possible exemptions.
Fees
£960 per year for the foundation degree.
Grants of up to £920 per year may be available from your Local Authority, or you can pay by credit card or by installments
