Course content:
The course is validated by the University of Sunderland and is intended for people who want to make counselling their career. The course has been developed with career progression and recognition by professional bodies in mind.

To achieve the whole qualification, a student must successfully complete

  Year one modules:
  Core model in Counselling
  Comparative theories in counselling
  Professional and ethical issues in counselling
  Counselling skills development and practice
  Personal development 1

In addition students are expected to be gaining counselling skills experience in some capacity; this can be from voluntary work or your own place of work.
Progression to year two is by successful completion of all year one modules and having a counselling placement organised.

  Personal development 2.
  Contemporary issues

Access to suitable counselling work situations (100 hours client work) is fundamental to successful completion of this qualification, either through permanent full or part time employment or through a collaborative work placement.

Assessment procedure:
Modules will be assessed through assignments, reflective journals, presentations, case studies and skills practice.

Entry requirements:
Selection is by a written application, personal interview and provision of references. You will need to demonstrate suitablilty for and a commitment to the programme.
Student must hold a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling or relevant qualifications in an allied discipline with experience of using counselling skills.

Qualifications achieved:
Foundation Degree in Counselling

Progression opportunities:
On completion of this two year part time course you will qualify as a counselling practitioner and can apply for employment in this sector. You also have the option of seeking accreditation with your chosen counselling professional body - the course is written in line with BACP guidelines. In conjunction studying for a third year at the University of Sunderland you can achieve a BA (Hons) in Counselling.
