Health & Social Care - Foundation Degree
What will I study?
The FdA is a qualifi cation in its own right, however it also offers progression to selected honours degree programmes. The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care has been developed by the Faculty of Health at UCLan in response to the needs of health and social care providers in the voluntary, private and public sectors, to enhance staff training and qualifi cations to meet service quality and performance agendas. The course combines academic understanding and skills, with generic and specifi c work-related skills, and incorporates occupational standards for health and social care workers. It aims to equip students working or intending to work in this sphere with the relevant knowledge and skills, as well as addressing their continuing professional development needs. The course will be relevant to students working or intending to work with individuals, families, groups or communities in residential and community-based health and social care related settings, for example, families and children, older people, people with physical or learning disabilities, young people or those with mental health or drug related problems.

How can I progress?
The Social Care pathway enables students to follow a selection of modules that will refl ect their employment interests and meet the needs of their service user groups. In addition students will develop an understanding of anti-oppressive practice which underpins work with the most vulnerable. People in society, through broader based learning that focuses on values and principles of service provision, and work based learning in the social sector. The course provides academic recognition and the opportunity for personal and career development for those currently employed inhealth and social care. It also provides relevant knowledge and skills for those intending to enter health and social care work that does not require a specifi c health and social care professional qualifi cation in order to practice. It provides an opportunity for academic progression and may facilitate entry to professional training. Opportunities will be open in residential, domiciliary and day care, nursing and care homes, advisory, support and rehabilitation centres, clinics and surgeries, voluntary advocacy and community organisations, acute, primary and social care agencies, and in health development/ education activities in schools, neighbourhoods and prisons. Employment opportunities in the health and social care sector are fluid and new roles are constantly developing as a result of changes in policy and organisation. Students successfully completing the course will be given advice on progression to an honours degree. They may have to complete bridging modules and another 6 modules. This can be completed in another 15 months.

What will I need to qualify for this course?

Entry will be based, particularly for mature students, on the ability to benefi t. Entry may be via: - 5 GCSEs (Grade C and above - NVQ Level 3 - GNVQ - National Diploma - A Level - Access course Accreditation of prior learning against some of the modules will also be considered on an Individual basis. Students should be aged 18 or over.

Course Structure
The course aims to equip students working, or intending to work in health and social care with relevant knowledge and skills, to address their continuing professional development needs and to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Students will focus on their personal and professional development throughout the course and will integrate their skills and knowledge in academic and work based settings. The Foundation Degree is intended to enhance career opportunities. There is also the opportunity to complete an honours degree in Care, Community and Citizenship (consisting of 1 further academic year at University).
