This qualification is for students with an interest in competitive sport, exercise and coaching for recreation and health. The course allows students to develop their knowledge through a large spectrum of exercise, science, fitness and coaching-based modules aiming to demonstrate how the applied nature of sports and science can influence performance and fitness. The course is comprised of lectures, seminars, practicals, speakers and group work maximising the development of students personal skills. Learners will be able to complete the foundation degree at East Riding College and on completion have the option of continuing their academic development by taking the BSc top-up degree.

Three A-level passes in relevant subjects (120 points) A sports-related level three BTEC diploma with a grade of at least MMM (triple merit) Level Three Access to Higher Education Diploma with a sports focus Other relevant level three courses However, all applicants will be judged on their own merit considering their previous sporting experiences, vocational history and current positions.

Course programme
The two year full-time course has a requirement of 240 credits equally divided between 12 20-credit modules.
Modules will include:
Year one
- Research methods and study skills
- Functional anatomy and physiology
- Biomechanics and motion analysis in sport
- Professional practice (work-based learning)
- The aetiology, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries in sport
- Exercise psychology
Year two
- Applied fitness and training
- Sports coaching
- Sport and exercise massage
- Nutritional strategies for sports performance
- Advanced professional practice (work-based learning)
- Group research project
Assessment for modules varies dependant on the content and may include written assignments, presentations, personal reflections, practical observations, exams and many others.
How will the course be delivered?The programme content will be delivered through a combination of practical and theoretical lectures. Students will have the opportunity to work individually and as a group whilst gaining additional programme support via seminars and tutorial sessions. Vocational experience will be delivered within a work placement of the students’ choice. Externally, students are expected to complete independent learning whilst using the College’s virtual learning environment for programme resources and interactive communication/support.
