Course Type A-Level
Introduction The course will enable students to develop a deeper understanding of French language and culture and is suitable for students who wish to build on the French language skills acquired at GCSE level. Students are encouraged to develop their enthusiasm for language learning and to communicate confidently in French. As well as the language skills, the course enables the student to develop independent learning and study skills. The course covers many contemporary topic areas, such as people and society, healthy living, leisure and sport, education and work, and technology, all within a French context.
Qualification AS/A Level
Entry Requirements College entry requirements plus a minimum of grade C in French achieved through the higher papers at GCSE.
Assessment The course is assessed through two units. One will integrate the skills of listening, reading and writing. The other will be a speaking test.
Costs There may be additional costs related to optional visits and trips, for example languages conferences, a study visit or work experience visits.
Duration 1 year to AS level and an additional year to A level
Other Details French can combine well with any other subjects on the curriculum as it is a skills-based qualification. French students are encouraged to take part in the study visit or a work experience scheme. Students will attend regular practice oral sessions with a native speaker outside the normal subject sessions. To be successful in French, students will need to be committed and interested in the way the language works as well as the culture and life of France or other communities where the language is spoken.
Progression Options Once students have been successful at AS level they will have the opportunity to gain a full A level qualification. This will be an excellent preparation for study in higher education, as well as an invaluable asset in a job in business, finance, tourism, education and the arts. Language students employability is widely recognised. Employers particularly value their practical communication skills.
