French
Introduction
French is the first language of some 90 million people around the world, in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, and an important second language of business, government and culture. Closer European integration makes knowledge of French language, culture and institutions both necessary and rewarding. Studying French at university is an enriching experience, offering exciting intellectual challenges to the lively mind. Because French culture, thought and theory is present in almost every other academic discipline, French studies are inherently interdisciplinary and international.
The Bristol French Department is interested not only in France and the French, but the Francophone world at large. Staff in the department are a mixed and dynamic team with international research expertise in many different areas which feeds directly into our teaching. There is a thriving culture of research from the medieval to the modern. This includes literature, film studies, contemporary history, critical theory, postcolonial studies. We offer stimulating degree programmes covering all aspects of French studies, and our options programme in the second and final years allows you to choose the units which match your own developing interests.
