    Bachelor's degree

  • Duration

    4 Years

Learning a language opens a door to another culture. On our BA Japanese Studies with International Experience you will gain a near-fluent command of the Japanese language and combine it with study of Japanese culture. You will be able to choose from modules on Japanese history, society and contemporary culture including cinema, popular culture, manga and anime.

Entry requirements are flexible and you can join the degree at various levels of competence in Japanese, from complete beginner to advanced learner.

The third year is normally spent at a partner institution in Japan to allow you to develop your language skills and your knowledge of the culture.

You can also apply for a three-year version of the programme without a year abroad, and you will normally also be able to transfer to this version of the programme during your first or second year of study if you decide you do not wish to study outside of the UK.

This programme is also available for part-time evening study over four years.

Course programme

COURSE STRUCTURE

The programme consists of 12 modules of 30 credits each (or the equivalent including 15-credit modules), plus the year abroad which is worth 60 credits' Accredited Prior Learning, making a total of 420 credits.

You must take the compulsory module Rethinking Japan: Introduction to Modern Japanese Society and Culture, and can choose from a range of pathways, of which a minimum of 210 credits must consist of Japanese language and content modules. Up to 150 credits can be chosen from other modules offered in the Department of Cultures and Languages.

The structure of your degree will vary depending on your language starting level. In Years 1, 2 and 4 you will take 120 credits per year. If Year 3 (study abroad) is successfully completed you will be awarded 60 credits, which is a requirement if you are to be awarded a degree ‘with International Experience’.

Please note: if you start the year in Japanese 2 you will be enrolled in an 'intensive Japanese 2' group (six hours a week, terms 1 and 2), followed by 'intensive Japanese 3' (six hours a week, terms 2 and 3). This means that you complete Japanese 2 and Japanese 3 content in one year.

If you have previously studied Japanese and think you might start at any level above Japanese 1 you can take a placement test between July and October.

This programme offers a great deal of flexibility, particularly in relation to the option modules you are able to choose. A typical set of modules, divided by year, might look like this:

YEAR 1
  • Japanese 2
  • Japanese 3
  • Rethinking Japan: Introduction to Modern Japanese Society and Culture (Level 4)
  • Understanding Culture: Language and Texts
YEAR 2
  • Japanese 4
  • Modern History of East Asia
  • Popular Culture in Japan and East Asia
  • Theorising Japanese Cinema
YEAR 4
  • Advanced Seminar in Japanese Culture and Society
  • Industry Placement (level 6 Arts)
  • Japanese 5
  • Manga and Anime
