Portuguese is the third most spoken European language (after English and Spanish), and the fastest growing language of Europe (along with Spanish). It is the official language of nine countries. Portuguese is spoken all over the world – in Europe, Africa, Asia and, of course, in South America. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world with the eighth largest economy. Portuguese is descended from Latin, and is quite closely related to Spanish, French and Italian. At Warwick, you will learn about the linguistic and cultural variations which characterise the Lusophone world.

Portuguese can only be taken at beginner level. You will develop your linguistic skills by taking a language module in Portuguese in each year you are at Warwick.

By the end of the course you will be expected to reach B2 standard (CEFR) in Portuguese (this approximates to A Level). You can spend your year abroad either in a French-speaking country for the whole year, or you can split your time between a French-speaking country and a Portuguese-speaking country.
