About this course

Gym experience is necessary because although the course teaches you everything you need, it will greatly improve your learning experience if you already have basic skills and knowledge about training.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and application of number involved, and candidates should have basic skills in communication and application of number pitched at Levels 3 and 2 respectively.

Who is this course suitable for?

Individuals who already have experience and understanding of the gym and using gym equipment.

Individuals who have energy and enthusiasm, and would like a change in career, wishing to become self-employed, running their own personal training business. Or someone who wants to work as an In-House Personal Trainer.

What are the entry requirements?

Gym experience is necessary because although the course teaches you everything you need, it will greatly improve your learning experience if you already have basic skills and knowledge about training.

There is also an element of learning online involving the use of a PC and the Internet; therefore you should have a good understanding of Information, and Communication Technology.

What will you learn?

You will learn to develop your skills and knowledge to pursue a career in Personal Training. You will complete 9 units:

Distance Learning is the teaching format, which means that all the units are studied using , and the manual. There are 9 units to be completed in order to gain the certificate.(For only Level 3 Personal Trainer there are 6 units)

Level 2 Fitness Instructor

Level 2 Fitness Instructor is the entry point certificate that is needed to progress on to becoming a Personal Trainer.

For , there are 3 units that are studied using E-Learning, the manual and our optional weekly Webinars.

Unit 1 - Exercise and Fitness Knowledge Level 2 - You will cover:

  • Components of Fitness
  • Principles of Training
  • Bones and Joints
  • Muscles and Muscle Actions
  • Cardio-Respiratory System
  • Energy Systems
  • Special Populations and Pregnancy and Exercise
  • Energy systems and Nutritional Basics

Unit 2 - Health, Safety and Professionalism in Exercise and Fitness Instruction

Unit 3 - Instructing Gym Based Exercise - The really fun part! Learn how to put together and teach a safe and effective program, that combines flexibility, muscular strength and endurance and CV components.

The assessment consists of:

  1. Exercise and Fitness Level 2 theory paper
  2. Health and safety worksheet (a set of 10 open book questions)
  3. Practical assessment where you teach a 60 minute session to a friend. You will show your session planning, evaluation, and risk assessment
Level 3 Personal Trainer

    Unit 1 - Health, Fitness and Lifestyle Analysis - You'll learn how to perform static and dynamic tests such as blood pressure, body composition, aerobic capacity and strength. Assessments: Practical observation of tests and written worksheet.

    Unit 2 - Advanced Exercise and Fitness Knowledge - This theory will underpin all your practical training and your future development as Trainers. You will cover:

  • Bones and Joints
  • Muscles
  • Nervous and Endocrine system
  • Functional Kinesiology
  • Energy systems
  • Principles, applications and benefits of Progressive Fitness Training
  • Assessment: Theory paper-mulitple choice

    Unit 3 - Advanced Resistance Training - You'll be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of the principles of progressive muscular strength and endurance fitness training

    Unit 4 - Advanced Cardiovascular Training - You'll be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of the principles of progressive cardiovascular fitness training
    Assessments for unit 3 and 4: Progressive programme and practical observation of session

    Unit 5 - Nutrition and Weight Management Advice - This module can be taken separately but is included in the Personal Trainer Award. It's great because you'll gain the knowledge to apply, monitor and adapt the principles of nutrition and weight management to a physical activity programme.
    Assessments: Theory paper-mulitple choice, and case study

    Unit 6 - Plan, Market and Sell Personal Training Services - Probably the most important module! There's no point having lots of skill and enthusiasm, without knowing how to sell yourself. We will teach you how to write marketing material, CV's, business plans and more to ultimately get you the job you want.

    Important note:

    You must have access to gym facilities and a participant to help with your practical assessment. If you're not within reasonable travelling distance to London, you will video record the practical sessions. Then send them to us for marking.

    Theory papers can be done at a test centre near you.
