This course will enable you to understand how language is used in speech and writing. The aim is that by the end of the course you will be able to analyse how we make meaning, construct sentences and choose our words. We also examine how we relate to others when we speak and write, as well as studying how children learn and speak

The other unit is an examination for which you will be studying newer methods of using writing, such as texting, emails, MSN and social network sites as well as looking at how language use is constantly adapting to the human need to communicate.
Duration
The AS course takes one academic year to complete with A2 a further year
Method of Study
You will study English Language through lectures and seminar group work. There will also be individual investigation of texts with teacher support and guidance. There is plenty of opportunity to discuss issues and ideas and you will be expected to connect this with your experience of language and research by linguists. You will need to carry out wider reading and to complete tasks independently.
Progression
Students achieving a grade D and above at AS can continue the subject A2 level.
