You should be aware that all Access courses are specifically designed for entry to Higher Education and that you are committing yourself to a further three years of study after completing the Access course.

In order to gain the Access to HE Diploma (Science), you will need to fulfil the requirements of the Rules of Combination .

The Rules of Combination are set by the awarding body, Open College Network London Region (OCNLR) to ensure that you achieve the right number and level of credits for your Access to HE Diploma.

To gain an Access to HE Diploma, you must achieve at least 60 credits:
45 at Level Three and
15 at Level Two OR Three

Credits are gained by completing units - some units are mandatory and some are optional. Mandatory units are common to all OCNLR - validated courses of this type. These are usually study skills units and are designed to prepare you for University level study regardless of the degree you finally opt for. The remaining units will be optional, which means the actual units included, and the number of these units, will differ from one course to another. To gain the Access to HE Diploma (Science) you will need to achieve the following combination of credits:

Mandatory units required that must be accumulated towards the Access to HE Diploma (Science): Examination skills - Preparation and Technique at Level 3, Essay writing at Level 3 and Basic Arithmetic Skills at Level 2 or 3.

Optional units that can be accumulated towards the Access to HE Diploma (Science) are drawn from all of the following modules: Study Skills, English, I.T., Biology, Chemistry (and Additional Chemistry), Mathematics and Physics.

Full details of the Rules of Combination will be available at interview.

After the course:
If you complete the course successfully, you will be able to take up a place on a suitable BSc or HND programme. (Please note that to be eligible for financial support for H.E. course fees in 2010, you must have been resident in the UK or EU for at least three years on 31 August 2010.)

The College has a Progression Agreement with Royal Holloway, University of London; learners who, at the time they apply, are predicted to achieve the Diploma will be guaranteed consideration for entry to a B.Sc. programme in Biomedical Sciences, and will be offered an interview by RHUL. Successful learners can normally expect to be accepted onto this programme once the final Access results have been published.
