Access to Higher Education in Health Studies
Course Level: Level 3 - Further Education equivalent to AS/A2 Level, BTEC National Diploma or NVQ3

Introduction
  • This course is designed for students who are interested in working in a health related care profession and / or who would like to further their studies and apply for Higher Education. There are no specific personal qualities needed but experience of working with people, in some sort of care environment, and good communication skills are useful. This course is designed for students who aim to work as a nurse, midwife, occupational, speech therapy and podiatry, or in other branches of health care.

What will be covered in the course?
  • There are 5 subjects covered on the course (up to Level 3): Health Studies, Psychology for Health Studies, Physiology, Study Skills (Mathematics up to Level 2) each subject has 6 units divided between 2 semesters the course is studied over one year. Tutorials and study skills offer the students support for those who have been out of education for some time. There is no organised work experience but students may want to organise their own placements.

What qualification(s) can be gained?
Access to Higher Education (Health Studies) Diploma is a recognised entry qualification for Higher Education, validated by the Open College Network and is equivalent to 2 or 3 A Levels. This is both an acceptable and a recommended course for entry to the Diploma of Nursing Studies, as well as Degree courses in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Health Studies and Promotion depending on HE institution.

How is the course assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course with a variety of written assignments, presentations, timed essays, discussions and exams.

  • Students may need to buy some relevant textbooks. Please contact the Student Advice Centre for information on course fees and students are encouraged to apply for Student Finance who may be able to help to partially fund the course.

Further information
An Interview is required to join this course. This is a 34 week programme that runs between 9.15 and 3.15 at both Blossomfield Campus and Woodlands. Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
Progression onto a Degree or Diploma or a Higher Education Health Professional course is the most usual route for Access to Health students.
