Applied Science (Forensic Science) National Diploma
This exciting programme provides an excellent opportunity for students with career aspirations to work in the field of science, with a particular focus on forensic science. You will learn about the principles and practicalities of working in a scientific setting and the practical applications of biology, physics, chemistry, law and psychology. Through each unit of study you will investigate how each subject relates to forensic science.

Course Content:
The course is made up of 18 units. All students take six core units which cover the three sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and provide a foundation of knowledge on which to build. In addition to these, students take 12 specialist units which are designed around the role of the forensic scientist and offer the opportunity to study particular areas of the field in greater depth. Key Skills:
OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations) Level 3 Key Skills qualifications in Communication or Working with Others will be an integral part of the course.

Work Experience / Practical Experience:
The course will involve practical laboratory work.

Attendance Requirements:
Full-time (approximately three to four days per week). Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
Mature applicants (those over 21 years of age at the start of the course) without the formal entry qualifications are welcomed and will be considered on an individual basis.

Entry Process:
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

Assessment:
Assessment is continuous throughout the course, with coursework involving research and assignment work. All work is verified externally.

Progression Routes:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to progress to a relevant science programme at degree level.

Career Options:
Students with science qualifications are endowed with qualities and skills that are highly valued by a range of employers. Career paths include employment in a laboratory environment, the police and forensic investigation.
