Course Overview

Qualification gained: BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Course Content: This course will cover a wide range of art, design and graphic skills including life drawing, still life drawing, photography, graphics and image manipulation, textiles, fashion, print, fine art and 3D studies(such as modelling, constructing or assembling), and historical and contemporary contextual studies. The course has three main stages:- Stage 1: Exploratory stage Unit 1 Information and Research in Art and Design Level 3 Unit 2 Recording and Responding in Art and Design level 3 Unit 3 Media Experimentation in Art and Design level 3 Stage 2: Pathway stage Unit 4 Information and Interpretation in Art and Design level 3 Unit 5 Personal Experimental Studies in Art and Design level 3 Unit 6 Extended Media Development in Art and Design level 3 Unit 7 Preparation and Progression in Art and Design level 3 Stage 3: Confirmatory stage Unit 8 Integrating Theory and Practice in Art and Design level 4 Unit 9 Personal Confirmatory Study in Art and Design level 4

Work Experience: Students do not have to have work experience or employment to achieve this qualification, as real and simulated workplace assignments will be used. However part time employment in a creative industry may help to inform a students work and progression.

Course Assessment: Study will be based upon tasks and set assignments with live and simulated briefs relevant to the sector. Assessment will be continual with a summative assessment at the end of each stage. A portfolio of work will be prepared and students will be supported to identify future career paths and in preparing university applications

Progression: This course is intended to develop skills and knowledge suited to progression onto a wide range of Higher education courses. HE progression can be into Art and Design, 3D and Product design, Fashion and Textiles, Photography and Media, Advertising, Graphics and interactive media but there are many subjects within the sector which cannot be fully explored here. Students are most likely to develop careers in one of the huge range of creative careers available. If entering employment following the course careers which require presentation skills orvisualisation may be of interest.

Homework: Students will be required to carry out additional independent work as homework and using college facilities. The amount of time involved will vary but an additional 3 - 5 hours of work can be expected.

Additional Costs: Students will be asked to provide a basic art kit (Approx 30 - 40) and will also need some resources relevant to their selected specialist progression e.g. Photographers will need a camera, Fashion students will need a sewing machine. Students are expected to attend exhibitions and to display their own work. Additional costs will be identified linked to study visits to galleries in other towns and cities and for entry to some exhibitions. This is likely to be in the region of 15 per visit in the UK. We also plan to visit a European city to study at a range of galleries and other cultural venues. Costs for pthese visits are likely to be between 200 - 300.

  • Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.
