About this course

Students will require 4 GCSEs at Grades C or above, one of which must include Art and Design; GNVQ Intermediate or BTEC First Diploma in a related subject to Merit standard.

Students should have an inquiring mind, self motivation and commitment to working within Art and Design.

Art and Design BTEC National Diploma (Level 3)
Course Content
This course prepares students for a career in the creative industries, offering a range of practical disciplines within art and design including: fine art and 3D crafts; graphic design and photography; multimedia and animation [numbers permitting]; fashion and textiles.
Students are able to follow a more specialist pathway in the second year in relation to their intended career route:
  • Visual Communication and its Role in the Creative Industries;
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design Disciplines;
  • Generating and Developing Project Ideas into Professional Outcomes;
  • Presenting Work to a Public Audience.

The course is studied over two years and carries 120-360 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
There are 18 modules in the Diploma, 8 of which provide a grounding in skills required for the entire course. The remaining 10 specialist units are designed to give students a broad portfolio for career progression.
The course is continuously assessed over the 2 years, progression into year 2 is only possible when learners complete year 1. Learners develop their skills and independence over the 2 years building up to a self directed Final Major Project.

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education (University and College).
Successful completion of this course can lead to employment or Higher Education (Degree or HND) in a wide range of Art and Design related disciplines including Ceramics, Graphic Design, Fine Art, Photography, Sculpture and Surface Pattern.
Additional Information
There is a £50 studio fee for each year of study which supports material requirements and educational visits. Students will also be expected to invest in sketchbooks and Art and Design equipment.
