Course description
Philosophy literally means the â€-love of wisdom†. But what does it mean to be wise? This A Level course will help you to understand what it means to be wise, to ask questions and to seek answers to those questions. It is a quest for knowledge; a journey on which you will learn how to think and develop skills that will equip you to succeed at University, at work and in life.
The course is split into two Units at AS Level, and you study two topics in each unit. Topics include: Reason and experience; Why Should I be moral?; God and the world and Freewill and Determinism. At A2 level you will study two topics from subjects such as Philosophy of mind; Philosophy of Religion and Moral philosophy. You will also study philosophical texts in depth including Plato†s The Republic and Nietzsche†s Beyond Good and Evil.
A good grade in English really helps as you do have to read complicated texts and write fairly complex essays.

A levels are divided into two courses, AS taken in the first year and A2 in the second year; combined together they equal a full A level. Both the AS and A2 courses comprise 2 units. On the whole, A levels are assessed through formal examinations at the end of the AS programme and then again at the end of the A2 programme. In some practically based subjects there is a coursework component. Both AS and A2 qualifications count towards the requirements for university entrance.
*Students aged 16-18 will not be required to pay the full course fee, in most cases your fee will not exceed £150. Please contact us if you need more information regarding fees for full-time courses.
