Course description
The Product Design course consists of four units. Two units are taken the first year of the course (AS Level) and two in the second year (A2 Level). Each year there is a coursework based design-and-make project (50%) and a written / design examination (50%).
The initial work undertaken in the first year will develop your knowledge and understanding of materials, components and their application in preparation for both the coursework project and written examination. A range of skills based projects will be undertaken around a common theme that will help to prepare you for these tasks, successful themes in the past have included furniture, lighting and jewellery. A supporting design portfolio will be generated along a range of practical pieces and models, all of which will be submitted for assessment.
During the A2 part of the course the examination theme is design and manufacture and another coursework project is undertaken in order to solve a problem which is identified by each individual student. The theory necessary to engage in examinations and coursework is taught throughout the course in a variety of forms appropriate to the learning taking place.

A levels are divided into two courses, AS taken in the first year and A2 in the second year; combined together they equal a full A level. Both the AS and A2 courses comprise 2 units. On the whole, A levels are assessed through formal examinations at the end of the AS programme and then again at the end of the A2 programme. In some practically based subjects there is a coursework component. Both AS and A2 qualifications count towards the requirements for university entrance.
*Students aged 16-18 will not be required to pay the full course fee, in most cases your fee will not exceed £150. Please contact us if you need more information regarding fees for full-time courses.
