ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
This programme prepares you to start working in the caring profession and to develop your skills and understanding in written and spoken English. As part of our selection process you will be required to attend an interview where you will demonstrate your ability and commitment to working in the health and social care profession together with a satisfactory reference, which will ask for information about your behaviour, punctuality and attendance. To join our programme you will need to have:

.Level 1 Qualification passed with Merit or 2 GCSEs Grade A*-D
.Level 1 Numeracy which will be assessed at interview
.National Literacy Test at Level 1 plus assessment at interview

Croydon College is committed to supporting employability and developing excellence within the Health and Social Care profession. Units on the course require applicants to work with younger children. All applicants will be screened by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) as this will help identify applicants who may be unsuitable to work with children or other vulnerable members of society.


PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This course is designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities needed for work and learning and to achieve your full potential as well as develop and improve your English Language skills. This is a practical hands-on course designed and delivered to provide you with the skills you need to enter employment or progress onto the next level of study. This course is made up of eight units of study:

.Communication and Individual Rights in Health and Social Care
.Individual needs in Health and Social Care
.Human Lifespan Development
.Anatomy and Physiology
.Health and Social Care Services
.Vocational experience in Health and Social Care

Approximately one third of your lessons will be delivered by a subject specialist teacher and a specialist teacher of English as a Second or Other Language.

In addition, Functional Mathematics and English and the BTEC Award in Work Skills as well as specialist awards in Food Hygiene. These are integrated into your studies to give you the option to achieve additional qualifications to boost your opportunities for employment and further study.

To achieve the Diploma you will need to undertake 60 hours of Work Experience in a Health and Social Care Setting in the form of a 3 week intensive block. You will have the full support of our specialist Work Placement staff who are both highly experienced Health and Social Care practitioners and work placement supervisors.

PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
On successful completion of the Diploma you have the option of going into employment or progressing to the next level of study (Level 3) on courses within this Department or another within Croydon College.

Students who demonstrate the skills and ability to do so may be invited to join a Fast Track group where they can complete this course in two terms and progress to Level 3 in the Summer Term.

ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE End of module assignments, individual and group presentations and observations of professional practice.
EXCURSIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE The awarding body for this course requires that all learners complete a total of 800hrs in their Professional Practice Placements. Attendance at placements is two days a week for the duration of your course in including Schools, Nurseries, Special Needs Schools Nursery Schools.
