Full Time BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Practice

Course Description:

Students are provided with a broad based popular music curriculum and have the opportunity to specialise in the field of performance, music technology, recording and composition.

All students will learn to compose and arrange music involving a variety of instruments. A wide range of themes include modern music practice, musical theatre, improvisation and singing. Working and developing as a musical ensemble is a key part of the course and skills are developed in performance techniques. The course introduces a practical approach to operating audio recording equipment and software. Students are introduced to sound recording techniques and an understanding of acoustics. Music theory includes a study of harmony and rhythm. Students will also learn about musical styles and periods that influence modern musical practices. Tutors are all active musicians. Performances will take place throughout the course at a range of different public venues. The course finishes with a major performance at a popular Lincoln venue

The qualification is equal to 3 A levels. Students can achieve up to 360 UCAS points which means they can choose whether to go straight into employment or go into higher education first.

The course is based in a purpose built facility equipped with specialist state of the art digital technology. Facilities include a recording studio linked to a control room with mixing facilities. An audio IT suite houses dedicated workstations.

The course suits those with a strong interest in music.

Entry Requirements:

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above should include English Language and Music. Equivalent qualifications or experience in Music will be considered. Students will be required to demonstrate a keen interest in the subject area. An audition is part of the interview process.

Progression & AssessmentAssessment and Progression: AssessmentAll coursework is internally assessed regularly and verified annually. There is no exam. All students aged 16-19 will follow an appropriate Functional Skills programme of English or ICT and this will be linked to their coursework. Assessment is by an external test.Progression

Successful students may seek employment within the music industry or progress to higher education studies.
