BTEC National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Level 3Duration
Two years full time

Attendance
The course requires approximately 17 hours contact time per week which will be timetabled between Monday to Thursday 9am to 5.30pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.

Course Description
This programme will introduce you to the building blocks of a career in Mechanical Engineering.

The first year of the course delivers the foundation knowledge required for a successful career in Mechanical Engineering and includes practical experience in workshops and laboratories.

The second year of the course builds on knowledge acquired in the first year. Topics are more specialised and studied in greater depth preparing students for progression to Higher Education if desired.

Course Structure
Year 1 Core Topics Include:
  • Properties and Application of Materials
  • Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Communication for Technicians
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Business Systems for Technicians


There is also the opportunity to gain a national vocational qualification in workshop practices.

You will also study Key Skills which include Maths and English.

  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Further Mechanical Principals and Applications
  • Computer Numerical Control of Machine Tools
  • Engineering Project
  • Electro. Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems and devices
  • Applications of Mechanical Systems and Technology


Course Assessment
Assessment runs throughout the programme, combining projects, assignments and course work.

Course Entry Requirements

  • Entry requirements may be waived for mature students who have considerable relevant experience.


Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

A £50 charge for course materials is applied to all full time engineering courses.

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be

charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

Course Progression
Successful students may pursue further studies within engineering at HNC/D level.

Course Career Prospects
  • There may be job opportunities including engineering technician, team leader and craftsperson. Further study at higher education will create opportunities in employment roles including engineers, technical managers, programme managers, and project managers.
