BTEC National Diploma in Agriculture
This is a practical, work-related course aimed at developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will be taught and assessed by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace demands, situations and activities.
Course modules include livestock production, grass and crop production, business studies, diversification, environment management, use of machinery and estate skills.
The students will be educated bilingually by enthusiastic and experienced tutors and can make use of the farm and engineering workshops excellent resources. Visits and excursions are an essential part of students development on the course and there will be an opportunity to experience good practices and expand their horizons on farm visits throughout the UK, at shows and international events and trips abroad. There will also be opportunities to gain additional qualifications while studying the course, such as Animal Transportation, Using Veterinary Medicines, Using a Chainsaw, Using Pesticides, Sheep Dipping and Tractor Driving certificates.
The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels. Having successfully completed the course students can choose to progress to higher education with the necessary grades.
Students can study only some modules of the National Diploma either full-time or part-time to gain a National Certificate.

What will I study?
You will learn a great deal about the agricultural industry and you will also develop a number of practical skills including computing, finance, managing a farm as a business, machinery and aspects of conservation. Mandatory units: Business management*, Livestock management, Principles of plant and earth science*, Livestock production, Estate management skills, Principles of mechanization*, Using machinery, Feed crop production, Work experience*, Agriculture and the environment*. (*These are the units you will study for the National Certificate)

Will I have to sit any examinations?
There are no final examinations but you will be assessed via assignments, tests and practical work throughout the course.

What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the National Certificate or National Diploma in Agriculture. You may also gain an NVQ or certificates in the short courses offered by the College.

What next?
Having been awarded the National Diploma you will be able to progress to an HNC/HND or BSc course. Having been awarded the National Certificate you will be able to study for the National Diploma in Agriculture, NVQ 3 and 4 in Agriculture, or Management and Accounts. The course can also lead to a career as a Unit Manager and to self-employment. After completing the National Diploma course you could become a college instructor or work in any job in the agricultural industry.
