WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
The National Diploma in Childrens' Care, Learning and Development course is a professional, vocational qualification with a strong emphasis on practical skills backed up with theory. It is recognised by universities and schools of nursing as being an equivalent to 4 'A' levels and provides appropriate training for entry into a variety of careers.
WHAT DO I NEED?
WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
The qualifications gained are BTEC National Diploma in Childrens' Care, Learning and Development (Early Years), First Aid at Work and a Food Hygiene Certificate.
You will also complete a programme of Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT. Functional Skills are an essential requirement for employment progression, higher education and other further education courses.
WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
You will need to attend classes for 4 days per week and atten one-day per week work experience. A study day is included, (usually a Friday).
In addition you will need to spend 10 to 15 hours per week on coursework at home or in college. You will be assessed by a variety of means - reports, group activities, practical skills, individual essays and discussions - most of which will be contained within Integrated Assignments to be completed at regular times through the programme.
In addition to the above, work experience of 800 hours is an essential part of the programme. Learners will be required to attend a work placement and will negotiate placement arrangements with Professional Practice Tutors. The work placement will be for at least one day each week plus a number of 2 week blocks.
You will also take part in extra curricular activities linked to course units.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Most learners go into a career as a nanny, nursery officer, nursery nurse in a playgroup or a play specialist. Other learners progress onto University for courses in teacher training and nursing (not midwifery).
Please note, under government rules those wishing to go on to teacher training will need to have attained GCSE grade C in English, Maths, and Science to be accepted into university.
