What's involved?

Core Units:

These units underpin the work you do on the course.

Performance Workshop, Rehearsing for Performance and Performing to an audience

These units are production based, and give you an opportunity to put into practice the skills and techniques you have been learning in the Option units. You will need to demonstrate that you know how to work as part of a performance company and can use the rehearsal process effectively to work towards a performance, either to the public or to your peers. At least one of the performance projects you work on will be devised, and another will be working with scripted material. You will develop team skills and also learn to work independently. The project you work on for the Rehearsing for Performance and Performing to an audience Units is called the Final Major Project (FMP), and as the name suggests, will usually take place towards the end of your two year course. Work relating to the Performance Workshop Unit encourages you to integrate the different art forms when creating, rehearsing and performing practical work.

The Historical Context of Performance and Performing Arts Business

These units are more theory and research based and will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the Performing Arts industry. You will consider the development of the Performing Arts, its different cultural, social and historical influences, and also develop your ability to analyse performance work. In the Business Unit you consider roles and responsibilities within the Industry and different career pathways. You will also consider how the Arts is funded, and how individual projects can be budgeted.

Option Units:

Option units fall broadly into Dance and Acting Units. These are also complemented by the Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers Unit and the Musical Theatre Performance Unit.

The Acting Units include the study of vocal techniques and using the voice in performance (Developing Voice for the Actor) and a range of skills needed by the performer. These will include being able to develop a role, how to use research and textual analysis to improve your characterisation, different performance styles and techniques, and how to rehearse effectively (Principles of Acting and Applying Acting Styles). The course will enable you to develop your skills at improvisation and use these skills to explore texts, characters, performance situations and themes (Drama Improvisation). An important part of what we do is creating material for performance from a range of different ideas, themes and stimuli (Devising Plays). For this you need to work as part of a team, using your creativity and research skills together to create appropriate and viable performance material. You will be involved in working with texts and through these will cover either Classical Theatre Performance or Contemporary Theatre Performance Units. Alternatively, you may create material to tour within the Theatre in Education unit.

The Dance Units will develop both performance skills and dance technique (Dance Performance), and your ability to create original material for dance performance (Choreographic Principles and Choreographing Dances). You will develop your physical, interpretive and stylistic skills in relation to specific dance styles (Developing Movement Skills, World Dance and Dance Performance). In the Choreography Units you will explore different stimuli and will learn a variety of different structures and devices, and apply these to your practical work. The course also provides an opportunity to study Tap Dance, exploring musicality, use of rhythm, and developing your technical skills in this popular dance form.

The Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers unit will develop your vocal ability and confidence in singing, and enable you to gain basic sight singing skills. Musical Theatre Performance provides a focus for bring these skills together through performance, and also allows you to study Musical Theatre as a Performance genre.

Progression
If you are successful in this course you could continue your studies to higher education to study to degree or HND level. You could also seek employment within the industry, including Theatre, Dance, Film, Television, Exhibition Centres and the Leisure industry or join a specialist Drama and Dance college.
