Is the course for me?
We offer two pathways to achieve the BTEC National Diploma Which are:

1. Performance and Excellence.
2. Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness.
This 2 year course offers you the chance to develop your experience and knowledge in the different areas of sport. The course is nationally recognised and equivalent to 3 A levels in sport.
You will be required to complete both the Introductory Certificate in Exercise and Fitness Instructing (year one, level one) and Certificate in Fitness Instructing in the context of the Gym (year two, level two).
You will also have the opportunity to further your coaching skills in the form of attaining coaching awards from recognised National Governing Bodies in Sport. This is not a compulsory part of the course and will take place outside the teaching hours of the National Diploma.

What will I learn?
You will learn about different aspects of sports through studying a variety of modules delivered in year one including for example: The Body in Action, Training and Fitness in Sport and Health and Safety in Sport.

At the end of your first year you will have the option to choose from following either:

  • style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: normal">Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness, leading to possible employment or Higher Education in Coaching, Fitness or Sports Development.

Upon successful completion of the 12 National Certificate modules you will have the opportunity to complete the extra National Diploma modules.
All students are required to attend one organised residential visit during the two years of the course and be prepared to attend other subsidised visits where appropriate.
You will be required to purchase College sports kit for use in lessons in and around the college at an approximate cost of £80. There may be funds available to help with this cost upon request on an individual basis.
A BTEC National Diploma Sport text book available for performance and excellence as well as sports development, coaching and fitness, which will aid and supplement your course, can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk at a Price of £24.99. As this course involves working and leading groups of all ages including children, you will be required to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check to ensure suitability for working with minors.
All learners will be expected to achieve additional Key Skill Qualifications; year one will consist of Application of Number and Communication, year two will consist of ICT and Working with Others. Completion of the Key Skills will give you an additional 40 UCAS points will assist you in progressing to University.

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English.
  • Level 2 course in a related subject graded at merit or above with key skills to Level 2.
  • At interview you will be expected to demonstrate your commitment to and ability in your chosen sport.


How will I be assessed?
There are no exams on the National Diploma whichever route you are following. You will be assessed in various ways including; written reports, presentations, leaflets and fact sheet production, practical coaching and leading of sessions. Although you will need to pass the Key Skills on-line tests, produce a Key Skills portfolio and CYQ multiple choice written and practical exams.

What can I do after the course?
You can progress into Higher Education, both foundation and undergraduate degree or direct employment in a sports related role.
