Who can join?
Anyone interested in this academic area, particularly school leavers wishing to follow a pathway into professional training, those already in relevant occupations wishing to enhance career and study opportunities and those who have attained an HNC and who wish to upgrade their awards. Applicants will require 3 Cs at Higher level; a relevant HNC or equivalent. Appropriately experienced mature candidates will be considered on their capacity to complete the course successfully. All applicants will be interviewed, and Disclosure Scotland checks undertaken.

How do I attend?
The course is designed for delivery on a full time or part time basis. Full time students should complete each level over one year, part time students over 2 years. There are three levels for degree graduation and four for Honours.

All teaching on the course is delivered through a vitrual learning environment so it can be accessed without regard to barriers of geography, time, domestic or other commitments.

Students will have access to ICT facilities at College sites but should preferably have access to a PC with an internet connection at work or home. You are required to attend The NHC-Thurso for a few days, usually in late August each year, as an introduction to the course and the technology. Throughout the course you can attend weekly meetings with Student Advisors in Thurso, Alness or Wick.

What will I study?
The degree follows four themes through the first three levels: Early Years, Continuum to Adolescence, Personal Effectiveness and Changing Society and Changing Practice. The honours year integrates all four themes. The course is holistically grounded in the disciplines of health, education and care, and explores the significance of early childhood through a continuum of development to adulthood.

Students are required to complete eight modules for each year of the course, learning through a combination of online materials, activities, tutorials, group work, discussion boards and independent study. Honours students will be required to submit a dissertation in their final year.

Year 1 study modules include core and optional modules:
Early Years : Introduction to Child Development, Introduction to the Early Years Curriculum, Continuum to Adolescence : Continuum of Development, Health and Lifechances, Personal Effectiveness : Developing Personal Effectiveness and Study Skills, Research Methods 1, Changing Society and Changing Practice : Family Studies, Provision for Children.

Year 2 study modules include core and optional modules:
Early Years : Child Development: Theoretical Perspectives, Play and Childhood, Continuum to Adolescence : Impact of Early Childhood Experiences on Adolescence, Care and Control, Providing a Curriculum for Life, Principles and Foundations of Health Promotion, Personal Effectiveness : Research methods 2, Working in Partnership, Contemporary Issues, Changing Society and Changing Practice : Recognising and Challenging Discrimination and Disadvantage, Specialist Provision or The Urban Rural Divide.

Year 3 study modules include core and optional modules:
Early Years: Legislation and Childhood, Applied Social Research, Continuum to Adolescence : Issues of Risk, Issues of Work and Leisure for Young People, Alcohol and Drug Studies, Personal Effectiveness : Literature Review, Effective Management and Leadership, Organisational Development, Changing Society and Changing Practice : Ethical Issues: Learning in the Classroom, Promoting and Enhancing Parenting, Health Improvement and the New Public Health.

Year 4 study modules include core and optional modules:
Comparative Childcare 1 , Professional Issues 1: Developmental Disorders, Understanding Crime, Culture and Society, Comparative Health Studies, Comparative Childcare 2, Professional Issues 2: Abnormal Psychology, Social Inclusion/Exclusion Issues and Debates, Disability and Society. Dissertation .

Course Fees for Part Time Students

The modules which count towards the full degree are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.

It is possible to use a current Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these modules as you come to study them.

Part time students may also possible qualify for the ILA500, which is a £500 grant for students studying HNC, HND, Degree and taught Postgraduate courses. You must study units totally 40 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) credits or more a year.
