Course description
Who can join?
You should hold 2 Highers, plus 3 passes in Standard/ Intermediate Grades (minimum Intermediate 2 English), or one of the relevant NCs or SVQ Level 2 courses available, or the equivalent.
How do I attend?
The course starts in late August each year, and students may study full time for 36 weeks either at The NHC-Thurso or The NHC-Alness, or part time over two years. The course will include 60 days work place experience. Part time students will be required to attend two evenings per week for two years at Alness or Wick.
What will I study?
You will study subjects relevant to child care, such as child protection, theoretical approaches to development and learning and promoting language, literacy and numeracy.

This course should enhance your career prospects and help you to gain employment in the Childcare sector. You may also be able to progress to the BA Child & Youth Studies, PDA Childhood Practice or BA Childhood Practice, or other Higher Education institutions or universities.

Course Fees for Part Time Students
The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.
You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.
It is possible to use a current £200 Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these units as you come to study them.
Part time students may also possible qualify for the ILA500, which is a £500 grant for students studying HNC, HND, Degree and taught Postgraduate courses. You must study units totally 40 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) credits or more a year.
