Course description
Who can join?
If you hold 5 Standard Grades or Intermediate 2 A, B and C levels or have completed the NC Child Health and Social Care or the SVQ Level 2 in Early Years Care, Learning and Development.
How do I attend?
The full time course starts in August each year, and students may study for 36 weeks, although it will be over two years for part time students, either at The NHC-Thurso or The NHC-Alness. This will include work place experience for full time students.
What will I study?
Full time students will study 18 credits of which 12 are the mandatory units required to gain the NC qualification which will meet the SSSC requirements to enable you to work as a support worker in early education and childcare.
The units which count towards this qualification are:
- Child development: birth to 12 years - DM3 X12 - Higher
- Developing an understanding of working with children - DM5 L12 - Higher
- Developing an understanding of working with children: work place experience -Higher
- Developmental theory in early education & childcare - DM3 Y12 - Higher
- HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections - DM5 T12 - Higher
- Holistic approaches to child health - DM4 012 - Higher
- Play in early education and childcare - DM41 12 - Higher

- Supporting children-s behaviour - DM5 K12 - Higher

What could I do next?
This course is designed to provide you with a qualification suitable for working as a support worker in a child care setting. You could also progress to the HNC Early Education and Childcare then the BA Child & Youth Studies.
Course Fees for Part Time Students
The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over two years.
You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.
It is possible to use a current £200 Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these units as you come to study them.
