EDEXCEL (BTEC) National Diploma in Medical Science

Course Details

A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You can learn by completing projects and assignments that are based in realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the theories behind forensic investigation,you develop the skills you need to start a career. The course is designed to give you a detailed understanding of medical science and the application of science to real situations in the workplace. During the 2 years you will study 18 units. Human Physiology Fundamentals of Science Medical Physics Biomechanical Techniques Microbiological Techniques Chemical Techniques Perceptions of Science Chemistry for Biology Technicians Scientific Investigation Working in Science Science in the Workplace Maths Electric Circuits The BTEC Natioanl Diploma Medical Science is a two year full-time course and is equally suitable for school leavers or mature learners.

Qualifications required:
You will normally need to have at least one of the following: At least four GCSE?s at grades A - C which include Science, Mathematics and English. An Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject at Merit level. A BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject at Merit level. Appropriate work experience.

Progression:
The National Diploma carries the equivalent UCAS points of 3 A levels in Applied Science (a maximum of 360 UCAS points) which on completion allows you to choose a related career or university.
You could consider a career in:
a hospital laboratory
a research laboratory
a quality control laboratory
a laboratory in a school, college or university
If you decide to go to University or College you could take a degree in subjects such as:
Biomedical Science
Biochemistry
Applied Science
Biology
This qualification is not suitable for progression to medicine.
