About this course

Students will require 5 GCSE's at Grade C or above including English Language.

You will also need an ability to research independently and an interest in language and writing.

Course Content
This course explores aspects of the English Language [spoken and written] in depth.
Students will develop research skills, a knowledge of historical aspects of the language and a knowledge of grammar.
There will be an opportunity for creative writing and for individual investigation. The course has four units:
  • Introduction to the Language of Texts
  • Original Writing and Exploring Spoken Language
  • Language Investigation and Writing for Specific Purposes
  • Analysing and Evaluating Language Mode and Context.
Teaching/Assessment
Students will learn to appreciate the written and spoken word in all its varieties.
Students will be assessed throughout both AS and A2 Level by the lecturer as well as providing two pieces of coursework. ]
The coursework will form 40% of the final assessment.
There will also be an external written exam at the end of the first and second year.

Progression
The course can lead to a variety of Higher Education courses.
It is good preparation for journalism, teaching, marketing, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), speech therapy and related areas of work.
English is a useful thrid or fourth subject for careers in which highly developed communication skills are desirable e.g. medicine and the law.
