English (Language and Literature) - AS & A Level
This course is for those interested in both English language and literature. It is particularly suitable for those who enjoy reading, writing, analysing and expressing their opinion on all types of literature and non-fiction. You will have an interest in language and be given opportunities to develop your creative writing skills. You will also be encouraged to analyse non-fiction pieces from newspapers, advertisements, speeches and travel.

What will I need to follow the course?
You will need at least 6 GCSEs, at grade C or above, including English Language and English Literature. Mature students will not require these grades.

What will I study?
You will study literary texts and selections of modern writing and non-literary texts. Literary texts will include The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Othello by William Shakespeare and Translations, a modern Irish drama by Brian Friel.
Will I have to sit any examinations?
You will sit 3 examinations in June for AS and 1 in January and 2 in June for the A level.
What will I have at the end of the course?
Having passed the first year examinations, you will be awarded an AS certificate. On successfully completing the second year, you will gain the A level qualification.
What next?
Having successfully completed the course, you will be able to progress to university to study for a degree in any of the humanities subjects, business, social sciences or linguistics. The skills you gain on this course will be useful for degree level studying any other area also. The course can provide a solid foundation for careers in journalism, linguistics, social work, teaching, advertising, public relations, and any job which requires excellent communication skills.
