Course Content
This two-year course is about the social, cultural and economic importance of films and the film industry. The course examines how film communicates to its audience through story, character, visual design, editing etc.
Students critically analyse films, examples of scripwriting, and studies of individual directors.
Study units include:
Film language [narrative, genre, character, lighting, sound];
Film industry [production, distribution and exhibition];
Film stars [economic, social and cultural value];
Film meaning [messages and values within cinema.]
The course examines how film communicates to its audience and the film industry; funding, production and marketing as well as in-depth analysis of film themes.
Students study the importance of elements of film art; the impact of Hollywood on world film production and the psychological importance of film to the Western audience. Looking at specific case studies of contemporary film, students build an understanding of how film language was developed.
This course is offered in partnership with Gowerton Comprehensive School.
Teaching/Assessment
Students produce a portfolio of textual analyses of selected films and excepts of scripts as part of their course work at AS Level. At A Level, students select a specific Director to research and look at examples of their work as evidence of individual auteur intent. There is also a creative component of this coursework which is choice between film journalism, script writting, or short film production.
Progression
Students can progress onto a wide range of Higher Education courses such as Film Studies, Media Studies, Marketing or Multimedia.
The subject gives an intellectual understanding of the Film Industry and analytical and critical skills which enhances understanding and can be utilised in a wide range of settings.
Additional Information
Students will need to supply a small number of blank VHS tapes. During the A Level a small selection of DVDs and magazines will need to be bought for the coursework research.
