Fine Art National Diploma
This course gives you the opportunity to experience a range of subjects within art and design.

Course Content:
Under the support and guidance from a team of experienced and dedicated specialist tutors, including several practising artists, you will study and work in the surroundings of the Colleges purpose-built art & design centre that offers excellent studio and workshop facilities. The course is made up of 18 units, consisting of five core units and three compulsory specialist units which all students must take, and 10 further specialist units of your own choice.

Subjects studied include:

  • Painting and drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Printmaking
  • Textiles and fashion
  • Photography
  • Contextual studies
  • Computers in art and design

As the course progresses you will adopt a more personal approach to your studies, enabling you to develop your portfolio for entry to Higher Education.

Attendance Requirements:
Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants should hold one of the following:

  • At least five GCSEs at grade C or above, including an art-based subject and English Language or,
  • BTEC First Diploma in a relevant subject at merit or distinction plus Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths

Applicants will need to show a portfolio of work at interview

Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
Mature applicants (those over 21 years of age at the start of the course) are welcomed and will be considered on an individual basis.

Entry Process:
An interview with the tutor will be arranged at the earliest opportunity after receiving your application. You will be asked to produce a portfolio of your recent art and design work that demonstrates your creative ability using a range of materials.

Assessment:
Assessment is continuous throughout the course, and includes a Final Major Project (FMP) that will be internally and externally marked. The overall grade for the qualification (Distinction, Merit or Pass) is based on performance across all units.

Progression Routes:
Successful students may progress to art or design-based degree-level courses in subjects such as Fine Art, Art History, and Printmaking. Some institutions may ask that you complete the one-year BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design.

Career Options:
The course can lead to employment in fine art, design, photography, applied crafts, textiles or fashion at junior level. With further study, potential careers include site-specific artist, professional printmaker, curating, and fine art photographer.
