Is it right for me?
Are you planning a career within the numerous rapidly developing equine support industries and associated advisory services (eg research, consultancy, inspection, behavioural and physical therapies)? The structure of this course includes units common to the Animal Behaviour and Welfare programme, providing you with a broad understanding of underpinning concepts and offering the option to delay specialisation until the second year if preferred, together with elective modules specific to the requirements of the equine industry.

What qualifications will I need?
120 UCAS points ' normally two A Levels in biological sciences, or average merit grade at National Diploma in Horse Studies. Recommended GCSEs: Maths, English, Biological Science. Mature entry is actively encouraged and relevant work experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.

Year 1 ' Level C:

Year 2 ' Level I:

• Equine breeding and genetics
• Management of estates and equine facilities
• Applied companion animal behaviour

• An option of either Psychology of the Customer or Therapy and Rehabilitation

What is involved?
This two year full time course requires 3 days per week attendance at Kingston Maurward College and includes a 200 hour industry placement prior to starting Year 2. The course is presented through a combination of lectures, discussions, assignments, practical activities, visiting guest speakers, specialist visits and work experience. Students can also expect to attend a study tour.

Where will it take me?
This qualification offers excellent employment opportunities in the following areas: equine welfare organisations, assurance, inspection and enforcement agencies, equine collections, equine behaviour consultancy and training, post'graduate education and research.

What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.

What is next?
A third year top'up (Level H) programme

A combination of assignments, presentations, course work, vocational practicals, case diaries and written examinations.

Higher Education Science Summer School
Kingston Maurward has been running for the last 4 years, a 5 day â€-crash course†in introductory bioscience theory and practice. This is principally for mature students who may have been out of education for some time or show sufficient academic ability but lack subject specific knowledge. However, this is also open to any Foundation Degree applicant who may feel that they are a little weak in science.

Runs in the last full week in July (subject to confirmation)
