About this course

Geology can be taken at AS Level without prior study of the subject. Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Annual fieldtrip to Arran in Scotland

Fieldwork visits to closer locations such as the Gower Peninsula and Pembrokeshire.

Career Prospects and Progression

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications. To pursue a geological career it would be useful to study other Sciences and/or Maths to A Level standard. The oil industry is a major employer and mining companies employ Geologists in prospecting for minerals. Civil Engineering Geologists investigate ground conditions before construction projects begin and other employers include water companies, local authorities and educational establishments.

AS Level consists of three Units: Unit 1 - Foundation Geology Unit 2 - Investigative Geology Unit 3 - Geology and The Human Environment A2 Level consists of three Units: Unit 4 - Interpreting the Geological Record Unit 5 - Geological Themes Unit 6 - Geological Investigations

Method of Assessment

AS Level Units 1, 3, 4 and 5 are assessed by theory papers. Unit 2 is a practical paper Unit 6 is coursework/practical investigation.
