Health And Social Care Introductory Diploma
This practical course introduces students to the foundations of health and social care. You will learn about caring for elderly people, children and those with physical and/or learning disabilities in health, social and early years settings. The course will give you an understanding of working in these industries, improve your own personal effectiveness, and give you the basic skills required to move on to train in your chosen sector.

Course Content:
The Introductory Certificate comprises four units, while the Introductory Diploma goes into more depth with eight units. Both courses include core units, 'Personal Skills' units and optional units. The subjects covered are outlined below. Core Units: BTEC Introductory Diploma students take all of the following three units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will take two (as indicated).

  • Starting work in health and social care
  • Working in health and social care
  • Developing skills in health and social care



Personal Skills Units:
BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose two of the following units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will choose one.

  • Personal effectiveness
  • Social responsibility at work
  • Financial management



Optional Units:
These units enable you to study particular areas in more depth. BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose three of the following units.

  • Looking after children
  • Images of people
  • Health and environment
  • Exploring local services

Attendance Requirements:
Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

Applicants should have:

    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Career Options:
    With further training or study, students can progress to careers in settings such as registered care homes, hospitals and primary care trusts, community work and the voluntary sector.
