Course description
Who can join?
If you have 5 subjects at Standard Grade 1,2 or 3, Intermediate 2 A,B or C or have completed the NC Child Health and Social Care or the SVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care, or the equivalent, you are welcome to apply.
How do I attend?
The full time course starts in August each year, and students may study for 36 weeks, either at The NHC-Thurso or The NHC-Alness, part time students may study the course over 2 years. This will include one day per week work place experience.
What will I study?
Throughout the course you will study for a nationally certificated award. As part of the course you will study Higher Care and Higher Care Practice. You will also study subjects relevant to health and social care such as HIV, health eating, psychology and health promotion.
What could I do next?
This course is designed to provide you with a qualification suitable for entry to nurse training but will also allow progression to the HNC Social Care, BA Health Studies or BA Child & Youth Studies.

Course Fees for Part Time Students
The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.
You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.
It is possible to use a current Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these units as you come to study them.
Part time students may also possible qualify for the ILA500, which is a £500 grant for students studying HNC, HND, Degree and taught Postgraduate courses. You must study units totally 40 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) credits or more a year.
