Health & Social Care National Diploma
This is a two year vocational course which aims to give students an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification at level 3 which will enable them to seek employment in the health or social care sectors or apply for higher education courses at university, such as nursing and social work or other degrees. The course consists of at least 18 different units studied over two years, 9 of these are core units and the rest are specialist units. Students have to pass all core units and complete all specialist units. It includes vocational work experience in health and social care settings during the two years of the course. The course is aimed at students at 16 or over who enjoy working with people and wish to broaden their experience and knowledge of the health and social care sectors. They should be committed to and interested in health and social care issues. Students should be able to work independently as well as in groups and will be expected to apply for Criminal Record Bureaux clearance.

Course Content:
The course includes opportunities to study a variety of subjects including sociological and psychological perspectives of health and social care, anatomy and physiology, development through all life stages, health and safety, effective communications and equality, diversity and rights. There will also be a minimum of 100 hours of work experience in the first year in a variety of appropriate health and social care settings which will enable students to gain and develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for their future employment in these sectors. Students will be expected to meet specific criteria for each unit including reflective diaries, presentations, essays, discussions and debates and evidence of achieving work based skills and applying these to their course work. All units have an assessment which can be achieved at a pass, merit or distinction and a variety of teaching methods will be used supported by specific learning resources. All students will be guided on appropriate textbooks and other learning materials. This is a vocational course and there is a strong link between the theory taught in college and its application in the workplace. There will be an expectation of some self directed learning as well as taught sessions within college.

Vocational Relevance:
This course is relevant to health and social settings and employment. Key skills are included at level 2 or 3.

Work Experience / Practical Experience:
Work experience is compulsory in a variety of health and social care settings. A minimum of 100 hours during the first year and a possible additional 200 hours during the second year. CRB clearance will be required for work experience.

UCAS points:
Up to 360 UCAS points can be achieved

Attendance Requirements:
Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available. Approximately 19 hours per week in college and one days work experience each week.

Entry Requirements:
Students must hold one of the following:

  • Other related Level 2 qualification



Entry Process:
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Progression Routes:
    Students can progress to higher education to undertake courses in social work, nursing or careers allied to medicine or other degree courses. Students can also use the work experience gained on this course to apply for employment within health and social care or other settings. This course is also useful for future achievement of specific qualifications such as Level 5 BTEC Higher Nationals in Health and Social care.
