About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C including History. Students who have not taken GCSE History but have a high level of ability in related subjects will be considered for entry. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty

Course Content

The study of History provides a fascinating contrast of periods, personalities and approaches. It helps us understand the lives of people who have lived before us and the way in which they have shaped the world in which we live. Study of the subject sharpens the critical faculties and the skills developed can be used in many other fields. It is hoped that the contrast between the late medieval, early modern period and twentieth century fascism will prove both interesting and intellectually stimulating for students.

Career Prospects and Progression

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to higher level qualifications such as Degrees or Higher National Diplomas. The History specialist may become an academic, lawyer, teacher, librarian, archivist or museum officer. In addition, the study of History is also valuable in gaining entry to journalism, broadcasting, politics, the civil service, and a wide variety of management posts in business and commerce.

Method of Assessment AS Level - Two written examinations (HY1 - Two structured questions from a choice of three [1:30 minutes in total]. HY2 - In depth study one set of questions based on historical sources [1:30 minutes]. A Level - Two written one 1hr 30 minutes and one 1:40 minutes plus one coursework assignment. Unit - Module Listing AS LEVEL AS Unit HY1 Topic 1 - Politics Government and the Crown 1482 - 1543. This takes us from the turbulent reign of Richard III through to the supposed loss of Welsh independence during the reign of Henry VIII. AS Unit HY1 Topic 2 - Religious Reformation and Change 1529 - 1570. A study of the dramatic events that changed the course of religion in England and Wales. AS Unit HY1 Topic 3 - Protest, Disorder and Rebellion c.1529 - 1569. AS Unit HY2 Topic 1 - Hitler and Nazi Germany 1933 - 1939. This explored Hitler's rise to power and the methods used to control and indoctrinate the German people. His obsession with racial matters as well as other aspects of social policy. Nazi foreign policy will also be examined. A LEVEL A Level HY3 - This is a coursework assignment on the origins of the Holocaust. For HY4 a choice of the following topics. A Level HY4 Topic 1 - Mary Stuart and Englands relationship with the Catholic Powers 1568 - 1588. A Level HY4 Topic 2 - Crown, council and parliament in the reign of Elizabeth, 1558 - 1603. A Level HY4 Topic 3 - Poverty, vagrancy and the poor in Wales and England, c.1483-1603. A Level HY4 Topic 4 - Tudor foreign policy, c.1483-1603. A Level HY4 Topic 5 - Support, opposition and resistance within the Third Reich, c.1933-1945. A Level HY4 Topic 6 - Germany: war and defeat, c.1939-1945.
