Course Content
The International Baccalaureate [IB] consists of a core plus six academic subjects. Students choose a subject from each group: three subjects at higher level and three at standard level.
The groups include:
- Group 1: Language A: Mother tongue English or self taught
- Group 2: Language B: Choose from French, Spanish, German or English B
- Group 3: Study of Man in Society: Subjects include Geography, History, Psychology and Economics
- Group 4: Experimental Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Environmental Systems
- Group 5: Mathematics at three levels
- Group 6: Art and possibly Music or students can choose another subject from groups 2, 3 or 4
This course is equivalent to 280-768 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
Theory of Knowledge:
Students reflect on what they have learned, this provides unity and coherence between the different subjects.
Extended Essay:
A piece of personal research [4000 words] in the subject area of the student's choice supervised by a specialist member of staff.
Community Action and Service [CAS]:
Students undertake activities in the fields of creativity, sport and charitable volunteering.
You will be assessed by externally set examinations in May of Year 2. Each subject includes an element of course work which is internally marked and externally moderated.
Progression
This qualification can lead to:
Higher Education: A highly acclaimed ââ,¬Å"international passportââ,¬ to Higher Education students can study on a wide variety of courses. Universities require from 25 points to the mid 30ââ,¬â"¢s, each certificate is graded on a scale 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). Previous students have progressed to a number of top universities including Oxbridge, a variety of medical schools, Yale University in the USA, and others.
Employment: Some former International Baccalaureate students are working overseas e.g. with the United Nations and in diplomatic posts.
