Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C including evidence of linguistic ability. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Course Content

A wide range of contemporary cultural and social topics are studied.

Candidates choice of oral work at AS rooted in the target language.

No coursework element in Year 1 or 2.

Almost exclusive use of target language in class and exams.

Candidates have independent control of listening material at AS and use of language laboratory and self-study packs.

Excellent resources available in Learning Resource Centre and library, including language magazines, tapes and videos.

Grammar is dealt with in a systematic and supportive way.

Career Prospects and Progression

AS Level provides an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas. Now that the single European Market is operating there are more opportunities for people who have studied languages.A knowledge of Italian opens up a wide range of job opportunities including Business and Finance, Travel and Tourism, Teaching and Interpreting, the MOD and customs amongst others.

Modules

GCSE: 4 exams in written,reading,listening and speaking skills. AS Level: Units 1 and 2 which cover the four skills listed above. A Level: Units 4/5/6

Method of Assessment

Assessment is by means of external examination: EDEXCEL GCSE will be assessed at the end of year 1 AS Level will be assessed at the end of year 2.
