Legal Secretarial Intermediate
The Diploma in Administration provides candidates with knowledge and skills essential for the modern office environment. Subjects covered include business communication, business administration, customer service and team working, office procedures and computing. To achieve the Text Processing Diploma candidates will learn to keyboard effectively, and become proficient in both Word and Powerpoint. On completion of the course, candidates will have flexible, transferable skills which they will be able to apply not only to a legal secretarial role, but to a number of administrative support positions. The course is suitable for post GCSE candidates or similar qualifications. Some candidates join us after completing NVQ , AS or working for a year or two after GCSE. It is suitable for both male and female applicants who wish to work in a business environment.

Course Content:
OCR Certificate in Administration Level 2

  • Unit 1 Preparing business communications
  • Unit 2 Maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and customers
  • Unit 3 Working in Business Organisations
  • Unit 4 Following office procedures to complete tasks
  • Unit 5 Create, manage and integrate files
    • Units 1 and 3 are externally examined in June
    • Units 2 and 4 are assignment based, locally assessed and externally moderated
    • Unit 5 is examined, locally assessed and externally moderated

    An integral part of the assessment of Unit 2 is demonstrating the ability to deal with colleagues and customers. Students will therefore be required to take an active part in team tasks which will include liaison with customers.

    • For candidates who achieve the 5 core units of the Certificate in Administration, plus the two Legal Options, the Diploma in Administration in a Legal Context will be claimed.

      Vocational Relevance:
      Employment opportunities are always available for successful candidates. Local legal firms approach the department each year seeking college leavers for junior secretarial positions, offering further training. In addition, agency contacts are established during the course and several candidates choose to take temporary work in legal or other sectors to find out what type of work suits them.

      Work Experience / Practical Experience:
      A week's work experience in May 2010 is an integral part of the course. It is integrated with Working With Others Key Skills.

      Attendance Requirements:
      Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
    If candidates have relevant employment experience this is taken into account as an alternative to qualifications for those returning to education. If candidates have completed Text Processing awards or key skills at level 2 progression to level 3 is expected.

    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Assessment:
    This course is assessed through a mix of continual assessment and final examination.

    Progression Routes:
    Several candidates decide to continue for a second year and take the Diploma in Administration at Advanced level, either in a Legal Context or with Event Administration.

    Related Courses:
    Diploma in Administration Advanced in a Legal Context This is suitable for more mature students who have been in the workplace but wish to return to education to gain work based qualifications. For those aged 19 to 25 who do not have a level 3 qualification funding may be available.

    Career Options:
    Successful candidates will find the job market buoyant with legal secretarial training schemes available at local and London solicitors. A wide range of other administrative support positions are also open to candidates. CNAAPSCI
