AS Level Biology

Why should I study AS Level Biology?
Appreciate how the human body systems can be affected by disease, including how the blood acts as a defence mechanism to limit the spread and effects of disease. Gain an understanding of how species are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This creates variation and contributes to the biodiversity of communities and ecosystems.

There will be opportunities to develop practical and investigative skills and also to discuss ethical and moral issues surrounding this fascinating subject!

What will be studied on the course?

  • Progress to study A2 Biology
  • Study other academic courses regarding Biology
  • Enter Science or Biology based employment

When does the course start and how long does it last?
Students will cover three modules, all of which are compulsory:

  • Unit 1 - Biology and Disease
  • Unit 2 - The Variety of Living Organisms
  • Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Biology

Students have previously enjoyed visits to Northumbria University, Centre for Life, Consett Park and Thornley Woods.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?
Learners are expected to have a minimum of the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Maths, English and Dual Award Science
  • Grade C or above in Science at Higher Tier
  • Good practical skills

How will the learner be assessed?
Unit 1 will be assessed by an exam in January lasting 1¼ hours.
Unit 2 will be assessed by an exam in June at the end of the course lasting 1¾ hours.
Unit 3 will be Centre assessed and externally moderated.

How much will the course cost?
Textbooks are available from LRC free of charge. All safety equipment and lab coats are provided by the department. You may be asked to cover costs of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course.

What progression routes are available?

Successful completion of an AS level in Biology may lead to:

  • Continue and do a full A level in Biology - see information available
  • Entry onto Foundation University Courses
  • Science based employment
