AS Level Sociology

Why should I study AS Level Sociology?

  • To study society and gain an understanding of the ways in which the various parts are connected together
  • To make sense of the rapidly changing world in which we live
  • To explore social problems and the work of those who deal with them.


What will be studied on the course?
Sociology is concerned with the way that society shapes people's behaviour, beliefs and sense of identity. Students on the course will be encouraged to question their own role and that of others in society. The modules studied will be:

  • Families and households - assessed externally by an examination in May (1 hour exam - 20%)
  • Education with research methods incorporated. (Assessed by 2 hour external exam in May - 30


When does the course start and how long does it last?
The course starts in September and lasts for one academic year.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, to include Maths and English


Where is the course based?
The course is based at our Sixth Form Centre at Lanchester.

How will the learner be assessed?
The course will be assessed by two written exams (externally assessed).

How much will the course cost?
Text books will be available from the LRC free of charge but students will be expected to supply paper and pens.

What progression routes are available?

  • A2 Sociology
  • UCAS points towards a Social Science degree
