Course programme

Mathematics AS/A2
Mathematics is the language of science, technology and engineering, and is also a key element of many other subjects, such as architecture, design, economics and medicine.

If you enjoy maths and like thinking creatively then you should think about studying the subject at advanced level.

What will I study?
The first few weeks of the course will contain some intensive algebra sessions to build on the skills you learned at GCSE and help you to make the transition to advanced level.

AS: In the first year you will study two Pure Mathematics units which will extend your knowledge of topics such as algebra, co-ordinate geometry and trigonometry. You will also learn new concepts such as calculus. The third unit will be applied mathematics. This will be either Mechanics, where you will look at forces and Newton's laws of motion, Statistics, which covers data handling and probability, or Decision Mathematics which looks at the use of algorithms to solve a range of problems.

A2: In the second year you will build on the skills and knowledge from the AS, with more detailed study of the key areas. All students study two further Pure maths modules, and another applied module.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 3 written exams at the end of year one.
A2: 3 written exams at the end of year two.

What can I do next?
A level Maths is essential for Higher Education courses in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics itself. It is also highly desirable for science and social sciences, any medically-related qualification, business and accounting.
