Media Studies A Level (Level 3)
Course Content
This two-year course is designed to give students an understanding of the issues around the role of media in today's society. This includes the consideration of the way that media portrays our world, the role of the media in young people's development and the influence of media on our lifestyles.
Coursework is based around the design and production of a practical video project and the study of a choice of media texts.
Study units include:
  • Media Products [TV, Games, Magazines, Internet, Newspapers];
  • Media's Influence [Persuasion and the Audience];
  • Media Industries [Control, Power and Technologies.]

Students gain an understanding of how media texts, such as newspapers and television, are put together by producers to create a view of the world.
Students develop a range of analytical skills and learn to debate some of the key issues in modern society such as censorship and the role of the state in relation to Freedom of Speech.
This course is equivalent to 40-120 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
For AS Level, students produce one practical media piece which develops their technical skills in media production and also extends their understanding of how a media product can be constructed to reflect a certain view of the World. Examples would be film trailers and magazine articles.
For A Level, students produce an extended research project on a topic of their choice studying indepth a small selection of media texts.
Progression
This qualification can lead on to a range of higher education courses. As students develop a wide range of skills on this course, a wide range of progression routes are possible including Media, Advertising, Public Relations and Politics.
Additional Information
Students will need a small range of resources for practical media production such as digital video tapes or minidisks for AS Level and at A Level students will need to supply their own chosen research texts.
There is a recommended course textbook which would help students in their studies.
